Inspiring leadership for a sustainable world

Module 1: Complexity, Collaboration & Creating Change

LEAD believes a sustainable future is possible, and that everyone has a role to play. The aim of the first module of the LEAD Europe Programme is to explore the complex interactions of multiple stakeholders in driving (or constraining) sustainable development.

Through interactions with guest speakers, peer learning within our diverse group of participants, capacity building sessions, and a London-based case study, participants will develop and enhance their knowledge and skills for engaging different stakeholders around shared goals to bring about substantial and lasting change.

Where do you fit into the “big picture” of sustainability?

The phrase ‘sustainable development’ covers a vast range of issues. It is increasingly clear that every sector must be involved in the movement for sustainability if we are to succeed in securing a more sustainable and equitable future. Understanding the value and motivation of each player is crucial to identify leverage points for action and develop effective initiatives for change.

To explore complexity, collaboration and creating change in a real-world context, the London module will focus on the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a case study for leadership on sustainable development.

The London 2012 Games exemplify leadership vision and ambition in all areas of activity, in particular sustainability. As a complex ‘project’ that connects many different stakeholders, London 2012 presents an excellent opportunity to identify and analyse the leadership lessons from the challenges and opportunities involved in such a high impact, high profile event. Ultimately we need to understand how to apply these lessons in order to become more effective collaborators and facilitators for action.

This module brings participants from across Europe together in London to strengthen their ability to promote sustainable development by:

  • Observing leadership on sustainable development in practice
  • Exploring the dynamics of multi-stakeholder engagement ranging from business and government to local communities
  • Practicing how to communicate compelling  messages
  • Finding a place to engage in the ‘big picture’ of sustainability and identifying how to grow their sphere of influence

Key components of the London module:

  • A case study and team challenges based on the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics
  • Exploring different perspectives on leadership for sustainable development
  • Applying a Systems Thinking approach to understanding complexity and creating change
  • Communication skills building and practice
  • Valuing diversity and collaboration for change
  • Collaboration on a LEAD Associate Project

By the end of the module, participants will have:

  • Explored the challenges and opportunities for action on sustainable development in the context of a multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Identified opportunities for personal and organisational action on sustainabile development.
  • Developed core communication and inter-personal skills that will enhance their effectiveness as sustainability leaders.
  • Developed networks and personal connections that will help support them in taking action on sustainable development in the future.
